It is good to know that many academic institutions today are including sustainability to their goals and missions. Their objective goes beyond getting regular whole school sustainability audit, but setting an example for other institutions to do the same for the planet and for the future of humanity.
Here is a look at three of the most sustainable schools in the world according to Pages, Places, and Plates.

The Green School, Indonesia
Set amid a green and lush Indonesian jungle, The Green School truly lives up to its name. Much of its architecture uses bamboo, while the school lunches are cooked using bamboo sawdust. Bamboo is a promising sustainable material that is subject to many research and development. The Green School has over 500 students and follows a curriculum that teaches healthy and ecological skills and habits. The school was also active in campaigning against the use of plastic bags.
Uaso Nyiro Primary School, Kenya
Drought is a widespread problem in Kenya and other African nations. To combat this problem, the Uaso Nyiro Primary School has a unique architectural facility designed to collect hundreds of thousands of liters of rainwater each year. What’s more amazing is that the locals themselves helped build the structure using local materials. Through its water harvesting and storage system, the school has helped local communities and sustained their vegetable garden.
Wageningen University & Research (WUR), Netherlands
WUR is dubbed as the greenest and most sustainable university in the world. It placed first on the Green Metric ranking from 2017 to 2019. The school offers various degrees that focus on sustainability. They have their own wind turbines and onsite thermal storage. It has been reported that since 2010, the school has seen a 49% reduction in carbon.
There are many schools today that take sustainability as a part of their core values. Through their efforts, more and more youth are inspired to do the same – live a more sustainable life for the future of the planet.
