Sunday Morning Education Opportunities

Senior High I – taught by Frank Hejtmanek – will continue the study of the book Following Jesus: Biblical Reflections on Discipleship that they began studying this summer.  Feel free to join now even if you missed some of the summer lessons.  They are exploring what it truly means to follow Jesus today. They are examining the Bible’s portrayal of Jesus and of what he accomplished in his sacrificial death. They will also be exploring New Testament themes of resurrection, rebirth, temptation, hell, heaven, and new life, and consider their significance for the lives of present-day disciples.

Senior High IItaught by Chuck White – will be discussing social issues as they relate to Christianity.  They will begin by discussing how the church can address significant issues, even controversial ones, constructively.  They will explore the church’s call to witness to its oneness in Christ and determine how Christians can live together faithfully in the midst of disagreement.  Once these ground rules have been established, they we will focus on a different social issue each week and examine it in light of scripture, tradition, reason and experience.

Junior High – taught by Tracy Meek and Kathryn Braddock – is an opportunity to grow in your faith and to live out your belief in God.  For September they will be learning how God chooses ordinary people to make a difference in the world.  For October they will learn that by choosing to be faithful to God, we set an example for others.  In November they will study the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt.  They will see how God chose leaders and the people chose to follow God, just as they make these same choices today.

Confirmation – taught by Arthur Davis – uses the Claim the Name Curriculum which covers: Our Community of Faith—hospitality, group-building, belonging, and commitment to travel the confirmation journey together; Our History and Heritage—takes the group literally and figuratively into Christian history, with visits to (and studies of) a synagogue and Catholic, Episcopal, and other United Methodist churches; Our Life Together—examines (and practices) what United Methodists do: worship, participate in the sacraments, and take action in the world; Our Beliefs—focuses on what Christians in the United Methodist tradition believe and the helps (Bible, creeds, Holy Spirit, prayer) for growing in faith; Our Decision—challenges youth to personal commitment and prepares them for next steps in the journey of faith.
