The Bible speaks about money a lot.  Two-thirds of Jesus’ parables deal with money.  2,350 verses in the Bible speak about money.  That’s more than the 500 verses on prayer and 500 verses on faith.  Only love gets more “press” than money in the Bible.  Our giving patterns are important to God, Jesus said, “where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”  (Matthew 6:21)

In spite of these scriptures, most churches lag behind God’s expectations of proportional giving.  Tithing, giving one-tenth of one’s income, is God’s expectation expressed throughout the scriptures.  “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. ‘Test me in this,’ says the LORD Almighty, ‘and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.’”  (Malachi 3:10)  Yet only 6% of church going Americans tithe.  We are not alone, neither are we exemplary.  I encourage you to consider the spiritual health reflected through your giving.

First Steps would occur if…

• Every member/family giving less than 2% of their income doubled their annual giving.

• Every member/family giving 3-4% of their income increased their annual giving by 50%.

• Every member/family giving 5-6% of their income increased their annual giving by 33%.

• Every member/family giving 7-8% of their income increased their annual giving by 25%.

• Every member/family giving 9% of their income increased their annual giving by 10%.
